Formica et Columba (Trinity)

Source: This poem was composed by the anonymous "Trinity Master" who published a lovely little book in 1852 setting Latin fables in prose side-by-side with his verse compositions; read the book at Google Books.

30. FORMICA ET COLUMBA

Labitur infelix Formica caditque sub undas;
Forte petebat aquas || depositura sitim.
Quercus erat iuxta crebris densissima virgis:
Arbore despiciens || blanda Columba sedet.
Continuo ramum quercus de culmine frangit:
Decidit in fontis || (nec mora) ramus aquas:
Illa tenens, mox in tutum se laeta recepit:
Nec tamen immerito || gratia talis erat.
Ecce! Petens praedam per silvas advenit auceps,
Et calamos, queis sit || capta Columba, parat.
Illud percipiens calcem Formica momordit
Aucupis; ignarae || ferre volebat opem.
Inde repentino morsu vir concitus, arma
Deiicit; et strepitu || territa fugit avis.

Prose paraphrase:

Formica infelix
labitur et cadit sub undas;
forte
petebat aquas,
sitim depositura.
Quercus,
crebris virgis densissima,
iuxta erat:
Columba, blanda despiciens,
arbore sedet.
continuo
de quercus culmine
ramum frangit:
ramus
in fontis aquas decidit
(nec mora):
mox
illa laeta tenens
tutum in se recepit:
nec tamen immerito
talis gratia erat:
ecce!
auceps, praedam petens,
per silvas advenit,
et parat calamos,
queis Columba capta sit.
Formica,
illud percipiens,
aucupis calcem momordit;
ignarae opem ferre volebat.
Inde repentino
vir,
morsu concitus,
arma deiicit,
et avis, strepitu territa,
fugit.
